Jungle

Tena is known as the "Gateway to the Amazon". Our city is surrounded by mountains to the West and jungle to the North, South and East. The Napo river which flows near Tena is the 9th largest tributary to the Amazon River and the longest river of Ecuador. In fact, the Amazon River was discovered from Ecuador!  Francisco de Orellana set out from Quito in 1541 in search of El Dorado (the city of gold) and eventually followed the Amazon river all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Amazon region of Ecuador, also known as "el Oriente" is home to incredible biodiversity: 800 species of fish, 350 species of reptiles, more than 300 species of mammals, an estimated 1600 species of birds, thousands of species of plants and trees and thousands of species of insects. The Yasuni Biosphere Reserve, located in the west of Ecuador, is believed by many to have the most diverse set of species in the entire world.

In addition to all of the plants and animals, there are also opportunities to visit local indigenous communities and discover how many of them hunted, fished and thrived in the jungle for centuries.  Some continue to live in the same way today. The most common groups of indigenous people around Tena are the Kichwa (or Quichua). But we also offer trips to visit the Huaorani and Secoya Indians.

We offer trips starting from 1 day to 7 or more, depending on where you want to go and what you want to do. You can stay in a lodge, cabins or do an extreme adventure and camp in tents in the jungle. All of our tours include a bilingual (English/Spanish), certified guide who is knowledgeable of the plant and animal species of the region. We offer your choice of daily activities, such as hikes, bird watching, night walks, fishing for piranha, visiting indigenous communities, learning the process of making natural chocolate from the plant to the final product (and tasting it!) and many more.
